Thailand abolishes rote learning

The Prime Minister of Thailand has ordered the Education Ministry to overhaul the education system this year by eliminating rote learning. The PM says that the current system does not allow students to use their imagination, and then "end up as employees because they are unable to think for themselves and are only capable of taking orders from others."  Click here for the rest of the story.

A new look

If you've been following this blog for a while you can see that some things have changed. The original title of this blog (from 2004) is back, and I've added some new categories to make it easier for others to find old posts.

The image in the banner is of an ancient Babylonian clay tablet from around 1000 B.C. that illustrates a geometric proof. I thought this was a nice way to include triangles in a represention of knowledge, learning and education (KLE). Click on "About" to read a little more about my new (old) title, why I like triangles and the meaning of tryangulation.

I'm glad to have some teachers among my readers, and I'm very happy to share resources and ideas with them through this blog. I have changed the way some of my categories are arranged so that it should be easier for me now to post more resources more frequently, without them getting lost. So if I share something about science education here, I have a specific place to save it, and you'll have a specific place to look for it later (the "Categories" section on the right side of the screen).

One of my New Year's resolution is to apply more diligence to improving my writing skills. That will mean, among other things, more diligence on this website.

I'm writing this from a new extension that I added to my Firefox browser that opens up a new pane for me to compose blog posts without having to go to my blog hosting site. So far it looks incredibly easy, and if this works it will save me lots of  extra work and time, which means more content with less effort!
